Overnight Markets
US markets closed relatively flat on Friday with the S&P 500 down only -0.05%. Healthcare was the largest contributor (+3.16%), while Industrials were the laggards (-1.53%). But the biggest news happened after markets closed; Index providers (Russell & Nasdaq) will add SpaceX to their indices, providing buying support after the IPO fizzled. The US and Iran exchanged strikes, ending the fragile ceasefire agreement. As a result, oil prices rose with Brent reaching $73 a barrel. The issue stems from Iran demanding ships use a route that is closer to them, for ease of control. Whereas Kiku, the ship that was struck, used a route made by the US to avoid sea mines. ASX futures are up.
Australian Market
The ASX 200 gained +0.68% supported by an easing of geopolitical fears after reports emerged that the US and Iran agreed to halt weekend retaliatory strikes and resume dialogue in Qatar. The local market witnessed a notable shift as Technology (+4.04%) staged a rally, with the second best sector well behind (Healthcare +2.12%) following. Healthcare leaders were Neuren Pharma (+36.1%) and Clarity Pharma (+15.7%). The former had their DAYBU treatment recommended for approval by the EU. Similarly the latter has also had their data on SAR-bisPSMA presented at the European Association of Nuclear Medicine (EANM).
Interestingly, WiseTech was up +7.2% today. This dead-cat bounce (facetious comment) doesn’t change our view that the thesis is broken due to the human trafficking scandal. Other stocks giving us winks across the bar: Car Group (+4.2%) and REA Group (+3.8%). Both had solid gains and trading at or near lows. REA is trading at a 3-year low. Interesting… adding both to the bench.
Portfolio Commentary
The portfolio did well today, climbing +2.06%, driven by a massive gain in our largest weight (21.5%), Technology (+3.2%). Our newly topped up positions from yesterday contributed meaningfully to the portfolio: Zip (+8.7%), Generation Development (+4.5%) and HMC (+2.4%). Other top returning stocks were; 360 (+11.7%), PC2 (+5.4%), and Xero (+4.5%). Financials were another strong performing sector for the portfolio, a 22.4% weight which returned 4.5%.
Pleasingly, even our most drawdown position stabilized; Judo Bank managed a +3.41% bounce. These widespread gains were far in a way the majority than the minor pockets of selling within the portfolio. Specifically, SKS (-0.7%), SHA (-0.6%), OBM (-0.4%), SRG (-0.3%) and COL (-0.2%).
